This is a simple card, but I think it’s effective.
I started
off cutting a simple card with MUM in large letters. MOM would work just as
well, you’d just end up with having to stick the center of the O back in.
This was a
really tricky one to get out. With the delicate font, and the huge size of the
letters, I had to use every trick to get it free. The cutting mats are really flexible,
so I bent them every way I could to get the card free. The trickiest part was
the U—the deep cut-out was really delicate.
From my
Miniature Rooms, I have a lot of fabric, and I happen to have silk. So I cut a
piece of green out that would fit over the letters, but not take up the full
front of the card. I also backed it with interfacing as silk tends to be
fragile.
The back…
The front…
The fabric
was stuck on with glue. You have to be careful with fabric as it can take the
glue and stain. This green was quite vulnerable to staining, so I stayed away
from the lettering edge.
My original
idea was to cover the entire word with flowers, tracing it out. However, I had
bought craft ribbon flowers, and they were a little too large to do it, I would
have needed much larger letters. That is still a possibility, but for this one
I decided to add little groupings.
Because the
base of the card was fabric, I sewed the flowers on.
I used the
thread to help anchor the parts of the card that wouldn’t stick to the fabric,
which making sure any thread would be hidden by the flowers.
I sewed
into the back, and then straight into the card.
Once I was
done, I creased the card so it folded.
It would
have been far easier to do this before I sewed the flowers on… I just got a bit
excited!
The last
step was to cover up the fabric, and the elegant sewing!
I stuck a
piece of card onto the back of the front, making a rookie mistake. The clips I
used left tiny indents in the card. Next time I’d add a scarp shim to stop any
damage from happening.
The final
product!
This card
is very basic, but I think looks pretty, without being too overdone. I love the
green, it looks like stems on rambling roses. Next time I’d probably try to
make the letters out of the flowers themselves, perhaps in a different design,
though.
It would work well a a birthday card, or a thank you, just change the text to suit.
